About SALA

The Summer Arts for Learning Academy

The Summer Arts for Learning Academy (SALA) is designed and operated by Arts for Learning Maryland for Baltimore City Public Schools. Now entering its 10th year, this award-winning, arts-integrated summer program engages students in a dynamic learning environment focused on literacy, math, and arts exploration. Teaching artists lead students in arts activities such as:

songwriting, theatre, dance, painting, slam poetry, illustration, drumming, ceramics, mixed-media visual arts, photography, Hip Hop music, filmmaking, storytelling, and more!

Meanwhile, students also experience daily literacy and math classes like never before: co-taught by an academic teacher and teaching artist! Students might find themselves writing songs to summarize the main idea in a story or creating dance sequences to remember the steps in solving math word problems. Learning at SALA is fun, creative, and effective–SALA students regularly end the summer further ahead on math and literacy testing! See the results.

“My daughter had a lot of help building those foundational [reading and math] skills to the point that when she went to school, the following year, she excelled in certain things that she wasn't able to before. I honestly believe because of the arts integration, it changed the way that she thought about math. It changed the way that she thought about reading. …She loved SALA to the point where she's like, 'Can I go to a school like this during the school year?'”
