About the Artist
Pronouns: she/her/they/them
Maya “SIFU” Sun” Fletcher is a MD Wolf Trap-trained Early Childhood teaching artist with Arts for Learning Maryland. She is a dynamic and captivating performance artist who has taken the art of time-based movement to new heights. Raised in the heart of the DMV, SIFU discovered her passion for art and storytelling at a young age. She has melted various forms of dance together to create narratives of physical expression, which would become the foundation for her unique style of performance. Performing throughout the DC and Maryland areas, in her work she acts as a mirror and vessel of healing for change throughout communities. Deeply rooted in cultural awareness and expression, she challenges those who view and participate to connect back to themselves.
Over the course of her career, she has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian Museums, and the Hirshhorn Museum. Her talents have taken her to Milan and Paris. SIFU SUN has inspired countless young performers to explore the power of movement and to use their bodies as a tool for social change and cultural connections.
Artist Statement
I believe movement in the classroom is such a powerful tool to teach to everyone. I believe it teaches us to pause and trust ourselves, giving us the power to be able to name and know for ourselves what we are feeling, thinking, holding in, and needing to release. Paired with patient instruction and graceful care, I truly believe children will take and create skills to help them throughout their lifetimes and beyond. As a supporter and educator, it is my goal to leave all sustainably equipped and empowered for whatever life may bring!
