Artist
Baba Bomani
Program Type
Professional Development
Description
In this interactive workshop, Baba Bomani will show teachers how to use aspects of hip-hop art and culture to create an engaging learning environment. Educators will learn rhyme-based strategies that build student writing and communication skills using the five steps of the writing process (pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing). These strategies also enhance vocabulary while making connections between essay writing and songwriting.
Testimonials
“Bomani’s workshop was the most fun I have ever had in a professional learning setting. I learned that rap has a formula, and is a fun and meaningful way to approach multiple aspects of ELA. I appreciated that the experience of how the learning was scaffolded for me, mirrored the way I would scaffold for students. This method is ideal for teachers who are looking for supports for their students as they learn and develop concepts and skills in poetry, rhyming, and the writing process. The synchronous approach of experiential learning not only put me into the mindset of a student, it also offered me helpful resources geared toward keeping my students engaged. I cannot wait to take another Kennedy Center course. This is also a formula that works!”
