Press your Persona: Printmaking Identity Symbols

Program Type
Residency
Description
During this 4-5 day residency, students will create symbols that represent aspects of their identity using a variety of printmaking techniques. Printmaking is the art of creating multiple copies of an artwork by applying ink to transferable materials. Printmaking allows students the space to persevere through repetition and experimentation with layering. One has to try, try, and try again to create THE print that best suits their artistic vision.
Through the artistic practice of repetition, creativity and curiosity, students will create multiple prints using their symbol icon in different ways to assess their ability to express conceptual ideas and assess how effective their use of materials are. By participating in impactful brainstorming activities surrounding identity, students will develop a deeper understanding of metaphor and critical thinking.
Students will have the opportunity to experiment with printmaking materials such as gelli plates, linoleum blocks, styrofoam plates, and stencils. By the end of this residency, students will have an understanding of symbolism, an exposure to a variety of cultural symbols and experience in creating meaningful compositions through the art of printmaking.
